AGM
Many thanks to all who attended the AGM, it was the best attended ever with 112 members present.
Kevin Colling was elected the new Chairman, with 57 votes to Ken Short’s 51. A new committee post of Vice-Chairman has been created and Ken Short was elected to this post.
Len Turner was confirmed as Club President.
We also have a new Treasurer, Ron Hooker, who volunteered for the post earlier this year and was elected at the Meeting. This ends Ken Short’s amazing 12-year stint in the job. Well done Ken!
Jennifer Hay has stood down as Playing Secretary after 6 years. Thanks go to her for her work in an area where the club really has expanded over the years, with more and bigger sessions, and regular simultaneous pairs competitions. We will let you know about a replacement.
Also the building subcommittee has disbanded, its work done with the ending of the proposed shared accommodation with the Cricket Club. Thanks again go to Bill Graham and his team who worked very hard over the years, not just on the Cricket Club proposal but also on accommodation generally.
It was announced that there were 484 members at the time of the AGM, this is 6 fewer than last year. This is the first time there has been a drop in membership, but, given the difficulties we have had over the year we have done well to maintain our numbers.
Accommodation
The main news at the AGM was that the Friends are planning to develop a new building, which would be an extension of the Michael Sobell complex, and would include space suitable for our purposes to which we would have access. Our Building Fund would part finance this project. A provisional plan has been drawn up, which includes a large room for playing bridge, as well as office and storage space for our use. We would have use in the evenings, but not during the day when the building would be in use by Michael Sobell staff.
The AGM gave full agreement to our support of this project.
However, it was decided that we should hold a Special General Meeting of the Club, once we have draft agreements with the Friends. It will be difficult to get anything significant to put before this Special General Meeting, as neither ourselves nor the Friends will have any formal rights over the building, once built. The Friends are going ahead with the building on behalf of Michael Sobell House, and would not expect to have any formal say on its use. Nevertheless, we will talk to the Friends to see what they say.
We will have to have the Special General Meeting fairly quickly, as the Friends want to start on the building as soon as they have planning permission, and would not take kindly to any delays caused by us.
Second Tier Duplicate
This has started on Sunday nights, with many of the existing Sunday players happily taking to a simple duplicate system. It’s easy-going, with 5 tables playing 15 boards this week. If you want to join in, come along to the Olwen Bettesworth Hall at 7.30 pm on Sundays.
