AGM
The AGM will be held on Sunday, 9th May at the Olwen Bettesworth Hall, starting at 6.00 pm. It will be followed by a finger buffet and bridge. There will be a lot to discuss, so this year we will be sending out notices to all members.
Amongst other things, we have decided to revise the constitution quite extensively. To give you advance warning of the changes, I will be asking our webmaster Asaf to put the current version and the proposed draft on the website for comments. If anyone wants a printed copy in advance, let Geoff Gray know.
Accommodation
There is no news in this area yet, but we are still looking at all and any options.
Building Fund
In the last newsletter, we stated that the Building Fund would remain in place for the moment, but that no further club income would go into it, and that we were making a £15,000 donation to the Friends from the Fund.
This did not happen. Instead, we are keeping the Fund going and club income continues to go into it. This is expressly at the request of the Friends. They still wish to set up accommodation on the Mt. Vernon site, for use both by ourselves and the hospice. The Building Fund could be a significant contribution to that project.
No Fear Duplicate
We have had enough positive response to this proposal to make it worthwhile. The problem now, yet again, is accommodation. At the moment we cannot find an alternative place or day for another session, so it would have to be at the Olwen Bettesworth Hall alongside the normal Monday or Thursday session, and the only available space is on the stage. This isn’t really practicable on health and safety grounds, so we cannot go ahead at the moment.
Kingsmill Bread
Kingsmill Bread are running a promotion where by collecting tokens from their bread packets, you can get free equipment for your sports club. As it happens, this includes bridge clubs, so we have decided to join. Please pass the tokens to Geoff Gray. The equipment isn’t that special, for instance 290 tokens will get us 4 bidding boxes, but it all helps.
Club Library
Anthony Nicholls, Stan’s son, has donated Stan’s collection of bridge books to the Club. At the moment we are making a list of them all. Once that is complete, we will publish the list on the website and as a printed list, so that members may borrow any book that interests them. We will probably keep the library at the Olwen Bettesworth Hall and Marion Sweet has kindly volunteered to act as librarian.
The Stan Nicholls Trophy
Anthony has also generously donated a trophy to the club, in Stan’s name. We plan to award it at the weekends away, as this was one of Stan’s favourites of the Club’s activities.
Bridge Supper
The next Bridge Supper is on Saturday, 3rd April and tickets are now available from the committee members.
Bridge Weekend
Just to remind you that the next Bridge Weekend will be 23rd – 26th April in Peterborough at the Marriott Hotel. Joan Prior has all the details and will take your booking. Tel: 01923 822939.
