I write formally to thank the Committee of The Sobell Bridge Club, and through the Committee the Members of the Club for bestowing upon me the honour of appointment as a Vice President of the Club.
This came as a complete surprise to me and I am not sure that at the AGM I responded as fulsomely as I might have done. However I assure you and all the members that I do regard the appointment as an accolade and one which I am very proud to accept.
Dot – who, of course, is entitled to her share in the achievement – and I are not quite founder members of the Club having joined eleven months after the Club was set up but in the fifteen years of our membership we have gained so much pleasure from playing Bridge at the Club, from friendships made through the Club and from assisting in it’s organisation, certainly a labour of love, that this news is a bonus albeit a very, very welcome one.
We have also taken pleasure in seeing the Club grow, in seeing it bring so much pleasure to others and in seeing it provide such tremendous assistance to The Michael Sobell Hospice and to those who, sadly, need the services provided therein.
Despite its growth the Club has striven to continue to be regarded as a friendly ‘social’ club where enjoyment in playing and meeting in a friendly way takes precedence over winning. We must – and I certainly shall – strive to keep it so! We must not forget our "raison d’etre".
