BENEFITS FOR INDIVIDUAL EBU MEMBERS

Car Parking – Clamping Started

Clamping is now in force, except in the spaces outside the Michael Sobell Centre. Passes have been supplied to the Club for use only in the pay-and-display car park on the right as you enter the site from White Hill and in the spaces past the Centre. Passes must be collected from the Club and displayed. Be sure to park in the marked bays. Do not abuse the system or we could lose our privileges.

Hertfordshire Bridge League

The HBA has a county-wide league with 2 divisions. There are West and East Herts Regions below them. In the past, there have been a few participating teams of Sobell members in the West Region. Currently there is only one. A team may have up to 6 members. If anyone is interested in joining a team, contact Doug Edmonds.

Extracts from the EBU 'Best Behaviour at Bridge' code

Bridge is an extremely enjoyable game. Courteous behaviour is an exceptionally important part of that enjoyment.

  • Greet others in a friendly manner prior to start of play on each round.
  • Be a good ‘host’ or ‘guest’ at the table.
  • Make bridge enjoyable for yourself, partner and opponents.
  • Give credit when opponents make a good bid or play.
  • Ensure that your mobile phone is turned off.
  • Enjoy the company as well as the game.
  • Remember that it is rude to criticise your partner or opponents in public, to be less than polite at the table, to gloat over good results or object to a call for the tournament director or to dispute or argue about a director’s ruling.

BROWSERS: People sometimes tell me about problems they are having with our website or more general internet problems. I usually ask what 'browser' they are using and am surprised at how many say 'What's a browser?'. Well, a browser is what we use to access the Web and you are using one right now to see this. There are several different browsers available - all free except the one you are probably using, ie Microsoft's 'Internet Explorer'. Your PC probably came with this already installed. Unfortunately, if your PC is about 2 years old or more, you probably have 'Internet Explorer, version 6' (IE6), unless you have updated it. Later versions of IE are much better. Half the world uses a browser called 'Firefox', not only because it is free. 'Flock' is an interesting browser that is oriented towards social networking but has lots of useful features once you get over the initial impression which is a bit overwhelming.
When I make significant changes to this website, I check different web browsers to see how they look. Each browser interprets web pages according to its own rules, so the same page can look quite different. Also some browsers are more compliant with standards. The Links page lists several other browsers, all of them free to download and dead-simple to install. You might find this little video useful: Installing Firefox.
Your questions, comments and suggestions are always welcome.
Do tell me if you are having problems!

The 'Links' page on our main website lists all the browsers that I know of. Click on any of them to download the browser. Installation is very simple.

You can find which browser version you have by clicking on the 'Help' menu at the top of your browser, then clicking on the last item, 'About.......'. If you want any help from me, just ask.
