Thirty one members and one guest our old Weekend friend Ron Bernstein - enjoyed the Clubs eighth visit to the Hilton Hotel at Swindon for a Bridge Weekend from 2nd 5th March 2007.
The Weekend was notable for the first visit of our Playing Secretary David Kilby partnered by Elaine Softleigh who, together with Diana Nelson , was also on her first Weekend, and for the fact that this was the first Weekend when scoring was automatically achieved through Bridgemates. This, of course, meant the results were instantly known and removed the requirement to score the sessions late into the night. Conversely automatic scoring also meant that the thrill and anticipation of coming down to breakfast to find out how well or badly one had scored the previous evening was removed as one member commented. This was also the first occasion when Weekend scores were posted immediately on the Club Website. On Sunday those present were particularly grateful to Shirley Tucker when not feeling well she soldiered so as not to disrupt the team competition. Well done Shirley!
Apart from five good sessions of bridge those attending enjoyed the excellent countryside surrounding Swindon including the lovely Coate Water and, yet again, the excellent shopping at the Outlet Centre. The excellent buffet dinners provided at this Hotel were enjoyed by members on Friday and Saturday but the set menu on the Sunday was disappointing. On our visit next March a buffet Sunday lunch will be included instead of the set menu.
The 10th running of the Stanley Nicholls Memorial Weekend Cup a reminder of the tremendous work done by Stan for the Club in general and the Weekends in particular was won by David and Elaine at their first try partnered by Dot and George Howlett at their tenth try. Diana and John Finnamore, partnered by Joanna May and Adrienne Finch , narrowly missed being the first pair to win the trophy on four occasions when they finished second. On Friday the Dorset membership Diana and John with Hazel Hart and Maureen Avins swept the board.
Prizes were presented by Joan Prior - Club Vice President
